MAKING THE MOST OUT OF YOUR NEXT FALL VISIT TO CALGARY, ALBERTA

Calgary often gets overlooked for the nearby Rocky Mountains, but this surprisingly cool prairie city has so much to offer visitors. From world-class cafes to architectural wonders, and adrenaline-pumping sports to urban oases, Calgary serves up a satisfying mix of big city amenities and outdoor adventure.

With the help of Calin Charles, we’ve put together a Fall city guide that covers the very best things to add to your Calgary bucket list so you can experience it like a local. Whether you're a first-timer or a repeat visitor, you'll discover new and exciting ways to maximize your time in Cowtown.

Fuel Up at Calgary's Cool Cafes

Start your day right at one of YYC's top artisan coffee shops. Calgary is arguably Canada's strongest coffee city. In the last 5 years, 22/25 of the top 5 in the National Barista Championships have all come from the city. The expert baristas take their brews seriously, sourcing and roasting top beans. Pictured here is Ben Put of Monogram, who won the 2022 National Barista Championship.

Be Wowed by the Architecture at Calgary Central Library

This stunning building is so much more than just books. The design from famed architects Snøhetta features gorgeous curved wood accented by plenty of natural light. Visitors love exploring the library's many public art installations, hanging garden, and abundance of cozy nooks to get lost in a novel. The Calgary Central Library is a modern architectural marvel not to be missed.

Get Close to Nature in Inglewood Bird Sanctuary

This peaceful urban oasis along the Bow River is one of Calgary's hidden gems. Nature lovers delight in spotting over 270 bird species from red-winged blackbirds to great blue herons along the forested trails. Escape the city streets to wander through the sanctuary's ponds, meadows and native plants. Keep an eye out for beavers too!

Soak in Panoramic Views

Lookouts like Scotsman's Hill in the southwest offer stunning vistas of the city skyline with the Rocky Mountains as the backdrop. It's the perfect spot to watch the sunset and capture Instagram-worthy videos. Or head up to Calgary Tower's observation deck during the day for a 360 degree bird's eye view. There are awesome lookout points all around the city.

Get Your Zoo Fix

The Calgary Zoo is considered one of the top zoos in Canada and lets you safely get up close with exotic wildlife. Don't miss Destination Africa to see gorillas, lions, rhinos and lemurs in meticulously designed habitats. The panda exhibit is also a huge hit with both kids and adults alike. Expect to spend at least half a day exploring all this zoo has to offer.

Catch NHL Action with the Calgary Flames

Calgarians love their NHL team! Take in an electric game at the Scotiabank Saddledome to fully experience the infectious energy of the C of Red fanbase. Enjoy watching the fast-paced action as the Flames take on rivals like the Edmonton Oilers and Vancouver Canucks. The affordable tickets make it a fun outing for families, friends and couples.

Escape to the Rockies

Looking for even more spectacular scenery? Banff National Park is only 90 minutes west, while Waterton Lakes National Park is a couple hours south. Here you're greeted with turquoise alpine lakes, abundant wildlife like elk and bighorn sheep, and endless hiking opportunities along ridges with panoramic vistas. Grab a picnic and spend the day reminding yourself just how small you feel against the dramatic Rocky Mountain backdrop.

Hit the Trails

Walk or bike Calgary's amazing urban pathways like the Bow River, Elbow River and Nose Creek routes. They offer flat, easy ways to soak in the views of the city skyline and riverside parks. If you're up for more of a challenge, try trails in Fish Creek Provincial Park or West Bragg Creek. Calgary offers awesome outdoor options right in the city and just outside.

Wander Through the +15 Skywalk

When the weather turns cold, you can still explore downtown Calgary indoors through the +15 skywalk network. This pedestrian system above street level links office towers, shopping centers, restaurants, trains stops, theaters and more through 16 kilometers of bridges. Pop up and down between buildings to warm up as you shop, eat and people watch without having to brave the winter elements.

Take in the Views Over Dinner

For a unique dining experience, head to Calgary Tower or the Major Tom revolving restaurant at the top of the Centennial Place tower. As you indulge in the creative cuisine, you'll be treated to bird's eye panoramas of the glowing cityscape. Reservations are recommended to guarantee a window seat overlooking all of Cowtown.

Experience the Local Music Scene

Catch some live music at venues like King Eddy, Ironwood Stage & Grill, Blues Can and more. Calgary enjoys a thriving local music scene spanning genres from indie folk to punk rock. Don't miss the chance to see up-and-coming bands in an intimate setting.

Explore Stephen Avenue on Fridays

This pedestrian-only street really comes alive on Fridays. Street performers entertain crowds, patios spill out with diners and food trucks serve up late night bites. Locals love bar hopping and people watching along Stephen Avenue, making it the perfect place to soak in Calgary's vibrant energy.

The possibilities are endless when exploring Calgary's diverse urban and natural attractions. Foodies, outdoor adventurers, sports fans, art lovers - there's something for everyone to appreciate in Cowtown. Use this guide to experience the very best of YYC culture.
